as automated production plants and traffic control systems. Traditionally, the software controlling such systems has been tailored to each system’s requirements. However, creating custom, one-of-a-kind designs is costly and not conducive to proliferation. In recent years, technology has evolved to the point at which powerful processors embedded in the environment can support generalized approaches. Such approaches use formal theory and well-defined design methodologies, and can be made available as commercial technologies. However, generalizations must evolve from experience and be validated in practice.

IEEE Distributed Systems Online: Looking to the Future
In 2004, IEEE Distributed Systems Online becomes the IEEE's first online-only publication. The original material from our monthly issues will be in the Digital Library and our peer-reviewed, archived material, since our launch in 2000, will also be included. From the record of DSO Web site visits, we believe we serve the community well. We will keep to our present winning formula improving our ...

to achieve a common goal. A main characteristic of these computations is that the processes do not already share a common global memory and that they communicate only by exchanging messages over a communication network. Moreover, message transfer delays are finite yet unpredictable. This computation model defines what is known as the asynchronous distributed system model, which includes systems...
